Today I would like to blog about an empty tomb. This is the most important thing that has ever happened.
Life is “nasty, brutish, and short.” It is also pointless. There is no meaning in the world, nor above the world, nor beneath it. In all the stars in the sky there is no purpose. With our great understanding we see no purpose, only an elaborate machine moving mindlessly toward utter failure. The human body, the ultimate machine, will fail and decay, giving at most a century or so of life. What is done during that time is of no real consequence, anyone you might hope to influence will soon die. Even the most successful political kingdoms have lasted for a short time. Ultimately the sun will explode, blasting every living thing on the planet back into a cloud of gas and dust. Even on other worlds the outlook is not good. In a few trillion years all the available energy in the universe will be used up leaving a lukewarm soup of burnt out stars and dark planets. There will be no life, no hope, and no point.
Just over two thousands years ago, the impossible happened: a virgin gave birth to a baby boy. Despite deliberate assassination attempts on several occasions, the first when he was less than two years old, He lived to become the most amazing personage ever. He had wisdom beyond his tender years, could perceive the thoughts of peoples hearts, and had power over the wind and waves. He could feed thousands with a few loaves of bread. He healed the sick, made the blind see, the lame walk, and raised the dead. Different from all those who had come before He was the son of God. Petty leaders had him arrested on trumped-up charges and arranged to have a murderer released instead of Him. He allowed them to bind Him, beat Him, mock Him, and ultimately kill Him. The body was examined by soldiers, wrapped in cloth, and sealed in a guarded tomb. Despite the precautions the tomb was miraculously opened and the Lord rose. He has given us many things, but most importantly he has given us hope. Because of his victory over death we have escaped from the pointless cycle of death and decay that otherwise would be our lot. He has promised us a “new heaven and a new earth” where there will “be no more death, neither sorrow, nor crying, neither shall there be any more pain: for the former things are passed away.”
Because of Jesus Christ there is hope and meaning in life. Death is robbed of its threat, for all that are born shall live again forever. The triviality and pain of life is replaced with peace and hope. This wretched existence shall be replaced though the grace of Jesus Christ with joy and glory. Only in Him is found truth and life. Follow closely His teachings and you shall find peace and joy. This I know is true.
