So how many words is a page? It depends. What words, what size page, what size font. That being said, a regular typed page is roughly 500 words in my experience (US letter, 1" margins, 12 point Times font). Need 1500 words, about 3 pages. Just written 20 pages, 10,000 words, more or less. Every major software package has tools for counting, so its easy to check. (Double spacing is closer to 250 or 300 words per page.)
Printed books tend to be less words per page, as they often have smaller pages but this varies hugely due to font choice (10 point is common, except in young adult titles), designers choices and how much dialog is on a page (many short bits of dialog tend to add white space and reduce the word count). The most accurate method is to count in your particular situation as word lengths vary wildly, compare for example a technical paper with a mystery novel.
A special note for teachers: if you assign a word length, you can calculate the number of pages you will have to read by multiplying the number of students in the class (who turn in assignments) by the words and dividing by words per page (275 is probably a good choice for a double spaced assignment). Makes you want to assign less essays doesn't it?
